How to get ready for winter driving

As a Pennsylvania resident, you are no stranger to a winter climate. It may be no surprise that recent data ranks Pennsylvania as the fifth most dangerous state for winter driving conditions.

When inclement weather strikes, a few precautions can help keep you safe on the road.

Watch the forecast

The elements in western Pennsylvania can change on a dime. Snow squalls, black ice and slush are all common road hazards, even on an otherwise sunny day. Check the weather forecast each day before you leave home. Have your phone set to receive all emergency alerts. You will receive a notification in the event of a sudden snow squall or other nearby weather events.

Keep supplies handy

Have a stock of seasonal essentials in your trunk in case of emergency:

  • Ice scraper and snow brush
  • Snow shovel
  • Sand, kitty litter or rock salt
  • Blanket
  • Packaged food and water
  • First aid kit
  • Road flares
  • External cell phone battery

Try to have your phone fully charged before you leave the house. You will want to have access to communication for as long as possible should you get stuck.

Check your tires

Bare wheels can lead to motor vehicle accidents. Use a penny to check your tread. Place the coin into the grooves with Lincoln’s head facing down. If Lincoln’s entire face remains visible, you need new tires. Alternatively, you may choose to install snow tires for the season.

Pennsylvania winters are unpredictable. Follow these tips and be ready when the temperature drops.
